Establish a Connection Between the Server and the Client

Follow the instructions to establish a connection between your desktop/laptop computer and your Pocket PC:

  1. On your desktop/laptop computer (referred to as the host computer), go to "Start > (All) Programs > PPC Tablet > Run PPC Tablet Server". You should see the PPC Tablet main window:
    Server started
Immediately, upon loading, it will be minimized to the system tray:
    Server started
  2. The server is now listening on the specified port . If you have a firewall installed on your computer or on your network, you need to use a port that is allowed by the firewall, or change the firewall settings to allow the port you chose. If you need to change the port number, click "Options". The following screen will appear:
    Server listening
In addition to the port number option, you have the options to automatically start the server when Windows starts, and to accept any incoming connection without receiving a prompt or asking for authentication. The second option is useful when you want to save the time of logging in or answering the prompt, but it is less secure (anyone that is on your network and knows your IP address can connect to your computer with PPC Tablet). You can hide the blinking rectangle that indicates the current view position when display feedback is active. And for security reasons you can choose to enable or disable the remote access your files through PPC Tablet and any request to your file system will be rejected by the server. Be extremely careful when allowing unauthenticated access together with remote file system access because this would enable anyone knowing your IP address to browse and download the files on your computer. When you are done with changing the options, click "OK" to return to the main screen.

  3. Turn on your Pocket PC. If you want to use a sync cable to connect with the host computer, plug the sync cable into the Pocket PC and the host computer. An ActiveSync connection should start automatically. Or, if you want to use your TCP/IP network to connect, make sure the Pocket PC's network card or WiFi card is turned on and connected to your network, so is your host computer.

Note: The ActiveSync and TCP/IP connections each have their pros and cons. If you want to remotely control your Media Player or PowerPoint presentation, using a WiFi connection gives you the most freedom. If you want to create handwritten signature or annotations on the computer screen, the ActiveSync connection is more responsive to user action.
  4. On your Pocket PC, click the icon and go to "Programs > PPC Tablet Client". When the Client application is opened, you should see the following screen on your Pocket PC:
    Select profile
  5. From the list of available profiles, select the one that you need.
If you don't want to be asked which profile to use each time, you can pick one and have it loading automatically each time you start PPC Tablet. Of course, you can switch the profile anytime later when connected by doing "Menu > Switch to Another Profile. There are a few pre-defined profiles: Default Devices, Tablet Only, Personal Data, PowerPoint Presentation, Windows Media Player, Display Feedback, Remote File System. The “Default Devices” profile includes a touchpad, a tablet and a numeric keypad. Each of the profiles is designed for use with specific purpose, like making presentations, working with documents, playing media, remote control and so on. The “Tablet Only” profile includes a single tablet. The “Personal Data” provides a set of buttons which users can customize with their own personal information to speed up repetitive data entry in electronic forms. The “PowerPoint Presentation” profile includes a set of pre-defined buttons to start, stop and navigate through a slide show, as well as a touchpad that can navigate the pointer or draw on a PowerPoint presentation. The “Windows Media Player” profile provides a set of buttons to control media playback and sound volume in Windows Media Player. The “Remote File System” allows access to all hard drives, Floppy/CD/DVD/USB drives on the remote machine and allows downloading files, starting programs, displaying documents, playing audio and video files on so on. The “Display Feedback” profile has a display feedback area which shows a portion of the desktop computer screen on you Pocket PC screen, you can operate desktop programs in remote desktop style or you can keep an eye on what's going on your computer when you are away.

  6. Once you've selected a profile, click "Load Profile". The profile will be loaded, and then you will see the following screen:
    Connect to host PC
  7. In the "Connect to Host PC" screen, enter the NetBIOS name (the computer name) or its IP address. Make sure the port number used by the Client is the same as that of the Server (specified in step 2). The Client can connect to the host PC in two ways: the silent mode or the prompted mode.

To use the prompted mode, select "Try to connect without an account" and click "Connect". (PPC Tablet uses this mode by default.) To enhance security and prevent unauthorized access to your host computer, a prompt will be displayed on the host computer screen (see below). Click "Yes" to accept the connection, or "No" to reject it.

To use the silent mode, select "Log in with your Windows account" in the "Options" tab and enter the user name and password of a local Windows account that exists on the host computer. (A Windows domain account is not supported at this time.):

Click "Connect" back in the "Host" tab to attempt a connection. If the user name and password are authenticated successfully, a connection will be made without showing a prompt on the host computer screen. If the authentication fails, a prompt (as shown above) will be displayed on the host computer screen asking the user to accept or reject this incoming connection. Click "Yes" to accept the connection, or "No" to reject it.

Known Issue: In some rare computer configurations, PPC Tablet has problems authenticating some of the local Windows accounts in the silent mode. Even if you have supplied the correct user name and password, the authentication still fails. In this case, PPC Tablet will prompt you whether to accept the connection or not. Simply click "Yes" to continue. We are aware of this issue and are investigating the cause.

If you enabled the "Accept any incoming connection without prompting or authentication" option in PPC Tablet Server (as in step 2), you will always be able to connect to the host PC without seeing a prompt, regardless of which connection mode you choose and whether your user name and password are correct or not.

  8. When the connection is established, the Client application on Pocket PC will display the profile you selected in step 5. The Server application on the host computer will show its status as "Connected" while processing the connection and will register the status in the connection log. All keys and mouse commands sent will be encrypted, while the display feedback data and the file transfers will not be encrypted for performance reasons.

  9. Congratulations! You have now successfully established a connection between the Server and Client. Continue to the next page to see how to use the available layout profiles. Section 2 : Use the Layout Profiles
