Troubleshooting and Support
Create or Modify Layout Profiles with the Designer
Follow the instructions to create. modify or delete layout profiles on your Pocket PC:
When you first start the Designer, you will see the following screen:
To create a new profile, click "
Create New Profile
". To edit or delete a profile, select the profile from the list, and then click "
Edit Profile
" or "
Delete Profile
" respectively. In the following instructions, we will edit an existing profile "
Default Devices
" as an example.
Before we start delving into the menu commands, let's review what a layout profile looks like structurally: a profile consists of one or more desktops (which cover the entire Pocket PC screen); each desktop consists of one or more components (such as key button, mouse button, motion area, desktop switches).
Look at the menu bar. There are four menus: Profile, Desktop, Component and Help. The first three menus correspond to the different levels of elements in a layout profile. The "
Desktop
" and "
Component
" menus offer commands to let you add, edit and delete a specific desktop or component.
Let's take a look at the first menu, the "
Profile
" menu. The "
Create New Profile
" command allows you to create a new profile. "
Save
" allows you to save the changes into the currently open profile. "
Save As...
" allows you to saves the changes into a different profile or a new profile. "
Switch To Profile...
" allows you to close the current profile and open another one for editing. "
Exit
" will exit the Designer application.
Let's look at the second menu, the "
Desktop
" menu. The "
Add New Desktop
" command adds a new blank desktop to the current profile. "
Edit Properties
" opens a dialog box for you to edit the properties of the currently visible desktop.
Both commands use a similar dialog box to enter or edit the desktop information:
In the dialog box, you need to enter a description of the desktop, its X-axis (horizontal) and Y-axis (vertical) grid sizes, and specify if you want to snap to the grid when moving or resizing a component. When you enable the grid snapping feature, grid lines will appear on the desktop (see below). Note that enabling grid snapping will not affect the components that are already laid out on the desktop. It will only affect a component when you try to move or resize it after grid snapping is enabled.
(Without grid lines)
(With grid lines)
Because every component is in design mode, the desktop switch won't switch to another desktop. Therefore, in order to switch to another desktop in the same profile, you need to use "
Desktop > Switch to Desktop...
" command. When you select that command from the menu, you will see the following dialog box. Select a desktop from the list and click "
OK
".
The last command on the "
Desktop
" menu is "
Delete This Desktop
". When you use this command, the currently visible desktop, along with all the components laid out on it, will be deleted. Use this command with caution.
Now let's take a look at the third menu, the "
Component
" menu. Here you are provided with commands to add, edit and delete a key button, touchpad button, button lock, touchpad motion area, tablet button, tablet motion area and desktop switch.
The "
Add Key Button
" command adds a new keyboard button on the desktop. A key button can send a keystroke, a key combination, or a sequence of key strokes and combinations to the host computer. When you use this command, you will see the following screen to enter relevant information for the new key button:
In this dialog box, you can enter the coordinates and size of the key button. You can specify the text or image file you want to use as the label of the button. Finally, you can record the key strokes into the button, using Pocket PC's built-in virtual input panel (
VIP
) software keyboard. (Note: To adjust the coordinates and size of a component, it is easier to use the drag handles. We will discuss this below.)
To start recording the key strokes, bring up the VIP and click "
Record Key Strokes
" (see below):
Here we are trying to use VIP to generate key strokes that can be accepted by the host computer when we use this button in the Client application. Because of the difference between VIP and a regular computer keyboard, PPC Tablet provides a few keys that do not exist in VIP. For example, in order to record a key combination of "
Ctrl+Shift+Alt+S
", first click "
Ctrl
" on the VIP, then click "
Shift
" on the VIP, then click PPC Tablet's "
Alt
" button, and then click the "
s
" key on the VIP. When you are done with the key strokes, click "
Stop Recording
", close the VIP and click "
OK
" to close the dialog.
One note about the "
Del
" key. Normally, a Pocket PC user can click "
Shift
" on the VIP, and the "
Backspace
" key
will change to "
Del
" key. This creates problems when we want to replay the key strokes on a desktop PC, because the "
Shift
" key will also be captured and replayed, which may cause undesirable results. Therefore, PPC Tablet provides a separate "
Del
" key, right next to the "
Alt
" key. In addition to this, PPC Tablet also provides special keys such as "
F1
" through "
F12
", "
Esc
", "
Ins
" (Insert), "
PU
" (Page Up), "
PD
" (Page Down)", "
Home
" and "
End
". These keys do not exist on the VIP.
Also, on Pocket PC, you can usually use "gestures" (sliding your stylus across the VIP) to generate special key strokes or enter a capital letter.
When you are recording key strokes in PPC Tablet, by all means
AVOID USING GESTURES
.
The gestures interfere with the recording, and result in wrong or missing key strokes. Always "tap" on the key that you want. For example, to enter a capital letter "
S
", tap the "
Shift
" key followed by the "
s
" key on the VIP. You can also use "
CAP
" (Caps Lock) to enter capital letters.
If you use "
Add Touchpad Button
" or "
Add Touchpad Button Lock
" commands, you will see the following screen. It is similar to adding a key button, except that the button action provides only two choices -- either a left mouse button or right mouse button. Click "
OK
" when you are done.
If you select "
Add Touchpad Motion Area
", you will see the following screen. Here you can adjust the X-axis (horizontal) and Y-axis (vertical) sensitivities and the orientation of the motion area. The higher the sensitivity, the faster the cursor moves on your host computer screen. There are four orientations you can choose: 0, 90, 180 and 270 degrees. Different orientations allow you to use the touchpad with the Pocket PC rotated to different portrait or landscape directions. Watch the Pocket PC icon (at the right lower corner) change its direction when you select a different orientation from the drop-down list. You can change the sensitivity and orientation settings in the Client application too.
If you select "
Add Tablet Button
", you can set the button action to "
Set Coordinates
" or "
Clear Screen
". The "
Set Coordinates
" action maps the left upper corner of the tablet motion area to the current cursor location on the host computer screen. When you move the stylus on the motion area, there is a trace of visual feedback left on the screen. The "
Clear Screen
" action will clear the trace.
If you select "
Add Tablet Motion Area
", you will see the same screen as the one shown in step 9. A tablet is different from a touchpad in that a touchpad is used to control the location of the mouse cursor, while a tablet is used to write or draw on the screen (such as creating a handwritten signature or annotation).
If you select "
Add Desktop Switch Button
", you will see the following screen. The button action you can associated with a desktop switch is the sequential number of the desktop (such as Desktop #1, #2 and so on). Note that a desktop switch does not recognize its target desktop by the description of the desktop, only by the sequential number. When you delete a desktop from a profile, the sequential number of all the other remaining desktops may change. It is recommended to verify the button action of each desktop switch in a profile whenever you delete a desktop.
Although most of the dialog boxes provide fields to specify the location and size of a component, the fastest way to move or resize a component is by using its drag handles. When a component is selected, eight drag handles appear (see below).
Dragging the top, left, bottom and right handles allows you to resize the component in that corresponding direction. Dragging the handle at the corners allows you to resize in two directions. Dragging on the component itself (not on the handles) allows you to move the component.
If you have enabled grid snapping in the desktop settings, when you move or resize a component, it will try to snap to the closest grid line. This allows you to lay out the components more consistently on a desktop.
When you try to customize a button, you can assign text or image as its label. When you use text, you can create a line break in the text by inserting "
//
". For example, "Start//Slides" is rendered as:
Start
Slides
If you use an image as the button label, the image needs to reside in the "
\\Program Files\PPC Tablet
" folder on the Pocket PC. To use that image as a button label, enter the image file name (NOT the full path) in the "
Label Image
" field of the button (see example below). When the image is displayed on the button, any white-color pixels in the image will be rendered
transparent
to allow the background color of the button to show through.
If you want to share the profile you created with another user, remember to provide both the profile and the image(s) used in that profile. All profiles and images should be saved in the "
\\Program Files\PPC Tablet
" folder.
Congratulations! You have now successfully learned how to use the Designer application to customize your profiles. If you have created a profile for a specific software application or a special purpose, you are encouraged to share it by submitting it to the technical support at
support@amorphous-media.com
. New submissions will be screened, and selected profiles will be published on our website.
If you encounter any difficulties while using PPC Tablet, please report the problems or suggest enhancements to our technical support as well. Thanks for using PPC Tablet.
