Use Layout Profiles with the Client

Follow the instructions to use the layout profiles on your Pocket PC:

  1. By now, the connection has been established between your host computer and Pocket PC. If it hasn't, please refer to Section 1 to establish a connection before continuing.
  2. There are a few pre-defined profiles: Default Devices, Tablet Only, Personal Data, PowerPoint Presentation, Display Feedback, Remote File System, Document Viewer, Internet Explorer, Windows Media Player, Firefox, iTunes and Winamp. You may have a different bundle of profiles depending on your PPC Tablet version.

The “Default Devices” profile includes a touchpad, a tablet and a numeric keypad. We will spend a little more time explaining this profile, because it includes some of the very typical use of PPC Tablet.

The "Default Devices" profile includes three desktops, each emulating a different device: touchpad, tablet and numeric keypad.

On desktop #1, there are two macro keys "Copy" and "Paste"; three desktop switches "D1", "D2" and "D3"; two mouse buttons and their corresponding button locks; and a touchpad motion area. (Note: In the newer releases of PPC Tablet, "D1", "D2" and "D3" have been replaced with graphical icons.)

Pressing the "Copy" or "Paste" macro key will send "Ctrl+C" or "Ctrl+V" to the host computer. Pressing "D1", "D2" or "D3" will switch you to desktop #1, #2 or #3, respectively. Note that on desktop #1, the desktop switch "D1" is grayed out, because it doesn't make sense to switch to desktop #1 when you are already on desktop #1. It is the same with other desktops.

The "LEFT" and "RIGHT" buttons emulate the left and right mouse buttons. The button lock next to each of them will hold the left or right mouse button in the down position until you press it again to release it. The motion area senses the motion and sends it to your host computer, just like a regular touchpad.

A touchpad has customizable sensitivity and orientation. To change these settings, go to "Tools > Touchpad/Tablet Settings":

You will see the following dialog box. Here you can change the sensitivity of the touchpad. The higher the sensitivity, the faster the cursor moves on your host computer screen. There are four orientations you can choose: 0, 90, 180 and 270 degrees. Different orientations allow you to use the touchpad with the Pocket PC rotated to different portrait or landscape directions. Watch the Pocket PC icon (at the right lower corner) change its direction when you select a different orientation from the drop-down list. When you press "OK", the new settings will take effect right away.

On desktop #2, there are "SET" and "CLEAR" buttons, three desktop switches (one of them grayed out) and a tablet motion area. The "SET" button maps the current cursor location on the host computer screen to your next stroke on the tablet. Usually you don't need to manually SET the coordinates, because the tablet will do that automatically when you apply the first stroke. When you move your stylus or finger on the motion area, there is a trace of visual feedback left on the screen. Click "CLEAR" to clear the trace. In the "Tools" menu, there are two menu items that perform the same actions as the "SET" and "CLEAR" buttons.

On desktop #3, there are 17 macro keys and three desktop switches. The macro keys compose a complete numeric keypad.

  3. The “Tablet Only” profile includes only one desktop that has a single tablet. Note that there are no "SET" and "CLEAR" buttons, thus conserving the entire screen space for the tablet motion area. To perform "SET" and "CLEAR" actions, use the "Set Tablet Coordinates" and "Clear Tablet Feedback" commands in the "Tools" menu.

  4. The “Personal Data” provides a set of buttons which users can customize with their own personal information to speed up repetitive data entry in electronic forms. When you first open this profile, you will notice all the buttons have a question mark on them. The question mark (?) means there is no value associated with the button. These buttons do not have values, because everyone's personal information is different. Use the Designer application to enter a value for each button before using it in the Client application. For more details on using the Designer, read the next section "Create or Modify Layout Profiles with the Designer" in the user manual.

  5. The “PowerPoint Presentation” profile includes a set of pre-defined buttons to start, stop and navigate through a slide show, as well as a touchpad that can navigate the pointer or draw on a PowerPoint presentation. Note that the desktop switch buttons in this profile use more user-friendly labels such as "Touchpad" and "Regular Tools", as compared with "D1", "D2" and "D3" in the "Default Devices" profile.

  6. The “Windows Media Player” profile provides a set of buttons to control media playback and sound volume in Windows Media Player.

  7. The “Remote File System” profile provides access to the system drives on the host computer (hard drives, CD/DVD drives, USB drives and so on). This feature is disabled by default for security reasons. If you want to enable it, you can do so from the options in "PPC Tablet Server", which is installed on the host machine. Users are encouraged to use Windows Authentication and avoid allowing unauthenticated connections when this feature is enabled. You can browse the drives and the folders by tapping on them. The "Download" button downloads the selected file to you Pocket PC device in the "/" folder. The "Run" button can start the currently selected file on the host computer - it works with executable files as well as with other files that have a default application associated with them, like your audio or video files (MP3, AVI, WMA, MOV, etc..), office documents (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc..), URL shortcuts or anything else that loads automatically when your double click on it in the Windows Explorer.

  8. The “Display Feedback” profile works like a remote desktop application. The area around the mouse cursor on the host computer is being displayed on your Pocket PC and you can make mouse clicks by taping at the location you want to click. To move around the screen simply use the display feedback area, like a touchpad and the mouse cursor will move is the desired direction.

  9. In the "Tools" menu, there are two other commands "Switch to Another Profile" and "Disconnect From Host". The first command allows you to switch to another profile while maintaining the connection with the current host computer. The second command allows you to disconnect from the current host and connect with another host, while keeping the currently selected profile open.

  10. Congratulations! You have now learned how to use some of the pre-defined profiles that come with PPC Tablet. Remember that every profile is customizable with the Designer. You can also create new profiles or delete existing profiles in the Designer. Section 3: Create or Modify Layout Profiles with the Designer
